Philippine Still Life with Basi and Rooster
Artist
Victoria Lakes
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
Basi is a fermented alcoholic beverage made of sugarcane produced in the Philippines. It is also the local beverage of Ilocos in northern Luzon in San Ildefonso where it has been consumed since before the Spanish conquest.
The 1807 Basi Revolt in Piddig, Ilocos Norte, occurred when the Philippines' Spanish rulers effectively banned private manufacture of the beverage. A Basi festival is held annually in Naguilian, La Union. My late grand aunt Viana from Laoag, Ilocos Norte used to consume a glass or two of this wine after a hard day's work. Thus, I dedicate this painting to her.

Wonderful setting and "still life", more artists should consider the subjects in their "still lives" as something unique and contributing to the upbuilding of the local culture as you have done!!
